  1. What is STREAM?
    STREAM; Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.  Unlike STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) STREAM incorporates the importance of creative/expressive elements such as design, communication/performance, & teamwork skills.  The A in STREAM includes not only the fine arts, but also music, performance arts, language arts, and so much more.
  1. Why should I send my child(ren) to the Science Academy of Chicago?
    SAC provides an accelerated academic program while nurturing the student as a whole in a loving and caring environment. The students feel that they have the support they need to become incredible citizens to the world. Below are some unique programs that SAC offers:
  • ADVANCED MATHEMATICS
    A grade level above in mathematics. This means that our kindergarten students are currently learning 1st grade mathematics.
  • COMPUTER CLASSES
    All students have access to the computer lab. The junior kindergarten – 2nd grade classes utilize the lab with their classroom teacher while all others receive instruction from our Computer Science Specialist. 3rd grade students will begin by learning parts of a computer along with basic typing skills.  As they advance, students will learn how to use the Microsoft Office Suite programs, Adobe Photoshop, computer programming and how to create applications.
  • ONLINE RESOURCES
    Families have access to curriculum, grades, and homework assignments online.
  • FREE TUTORING
    Beginning in kindergarten, free tutoring is available twice a week for students that need additional support.
  • SMALL CLASS SIZES
    Our average class size is 15 students.
  • ENRICHING AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
    Students can sign up for a variety of after-school clubs and activities to participate in after school. Some of last year’s clubs included Film Club, Tae Kwon Do, Chess, Newspaper and Media Club, FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics, Children’s Theater and Mixed Media Club.   1. How can I learn more about the school?
    Please complete our online interest form, so that we can contact you with more information about our school.  You can also take a look at our upcoming open house dates.
  2. May I come visit the school?
    Yes, you can definitely visit us at the school, please contact our enrollment coordinator at enrollment@saoc.org or at 847-258-5254, to schedule an appointment.
  3. What is a shadow day?
    Shadow Day is for perspective students to spend a day in our classrooms to see if our school is a good fit for them.  It is also an opportunity for our teachers to make observations of your child’s performance in the classroom and for the child to get accustomed to our school.  On that day, the student will also take a screening test, which will allow us to assess your child’s math and reading skills.
  4. How do I schedule a shadow day for my child?
    Please complete our online interest form and our enrollment coordinator will follow up with you.
  5. Is there financial aid available?
    Yes – we do offer financial aid to families that can demonstrate need. Please schedule a meeting with our director so we can learn more about you and your family.
  6. What are the school hours?
    The school day begins at 8:20am and ends at 3 PM for students in preschool through third grade.  Students in fourth grade through eighth grade will conclude their day at 3:15 PM.
  7. What is the difference between a normal school day and an extended school day?
    Extended Hours 7:00am-6:00pm
    For working families, the extended school day offers families early drop off as well as a later pick up time for a fee. During the extended school day, the students will have the opportunity to do the following:
  • Read: Most teachers encourage students to read on their own for at least 20 minutes a day.
  • Homework Assistance: Students will receive help with their homework.
  • Play Time: Students will spend some time in the gym or the playground if the weather allows.
  • Snack: Families are encouraged to pack a light after school snack for the students.
