At the Fermilab our students were able to see many exciting experiments, one of the fascinating experiments was when one of the scientists dipped a flower and tennis ball into liquid nitrogen, this was awesome, they dropped the items as we watched them break in to many pieces! How cool is that!
We visited Lego Land and found President Obama, the children were thrilled and had to have a photo with him. Our goal is to get an actual photo in May. We will visit the White House and many other important places of D.C.
Elmhurst College, what can we say, it’s a wonderful place, with wonderful people who allow our student’s to conduct their science fair projects. With the help of their lab our students are able to complete their projects to their best ability.
Our Field Trip to the Niles Public Library was so much fun! The students viewed an exhibit on Benjamin Franklin, they were so excited to share all of the exciting facts that they had learned!
Our Second weekend of school, SAC students Amra, Azra, Yeliz, Hanna, Manka, and Havva traveled to Sandusky, Ohio with Mr. Kandemir and his family. They spent the weekend at Cedar Point, a huge amusement park with many rollercoaster’s. They had an AWESOME trip!
Europe Trip - Summer 2005... We began our journey on June and it ended on June 19th. We had a really good time there. We stayed in Istanbul for 7 days, and we also participated INEPO (International Environmental Project Olympiad) there where there were candidates from 26 countries and our 7th grade student, Nuriye Aksoy, earned the bronze medal. We spent another 8 days in Europe visiting 4 different countries; Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and France. We came back to Chicago on June 19th.
Shedd Aquarium - December 2004... On Friday, December 3rd, the students of SAC took a field trip to the Shedd Aquarium. The morning began with a viewing of the beluga whales. At the tank, a friendly Shedd employee was willing to answer questions and share interesting information about the whales. Next, the students attended the Pacific white-sided dolphin show where they learned how the trainers train the dolphins to do their “tricks.”
Science and Industry Museum - October 2004... In a quest for knowledge, understanding, and fun, the students of SAC embarked on their second field trip destination of the year, The Museum of Science and Industry. While at the museum, students explored the museum's coal mine, bounced through Petroleum Planet, peered into Colleen Moore's fairy castle, watched as the model train traveled from Chicago to Seattle, and observed baby chicks as they hatched.
Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My! - September 2004... In September, SAC students, teachers, and parents visited the Lincoln Park Zoo. Students were eager to visit the zoo's brand new exhibit, The Regenstein Center for African Apes, which includes gorillas and chimpanzees. Excitement filled the center since their newest gorilla had been born only a few days before our visit. Besides visiting the Regenstein Center, the students also took advantage of the other exciting exhibits the zoo offers. A favorite of the third graders was watching the polar bear as he swam underwater very close to the glass.
Springfield Trip - May 2004... This year the 8th graders of Science Academy explored the state capital, Springfield, for their class trip. The students enjoyed a weekend of sightseeing at historic Lincoln sites as well as fun and camaraderie with their classmates. The students waved goodbye to their parents and headed to Springfield in a 15-passenger van bright and early Saturday morning. Three hours (or 1 ½ movies) later, they began their day of sightseeing. The first stop was a visit to the Lincoln-Herndon law offices where Abraham Lincoln practiced law.
Spring Break Trip to Washington D.C. - April 2004... Even though plagued by rain, SAC family, friends, and faculty managed to have a good time in our nation's capital over spring break. We began our journey early Monday morning and spent the entire day driving. We were well occupied with DVD's, books, and good company. Our exploration of Washington D.C. began with a visit to Mount Vernon, home of George and Martha Washington.
Medieval Times - April 2004... On April 28th, 2004, SAC went back in time by visiting the infamous Medieval Times in Schaumburg. Students were immediately excited upon pulling into the parking lot and viewing the massive castle before us. The authentic medieval costumes and swords grabbed everyone's attention. Let's not forget the crowns that sat atop all of our heads throughout the entire adventure! Everyone enjoyed the tricks performed by the talented horses, and knights, for that matter.
Field Museum - March 2004... On March 30, 2004, students and staff of SAC spent an enjoyable, and busy, day at the Field Museum. We spent the entire day walking through a variety of unique and educational exhibits. Exhibits ranged from precious jewelry and stones to experiencing a variety of different cultures and countries. Some of the most memorable and favorite exhibits included: Sue, and all the other types of dinosaurs, the underground adventure (where we became the size of an ant)...
DuSable Museum of African American History - February 2004... February is known as African American History month. And on February 10, 2004 the students took a field trip to the DuSable Museum of African American History. The children were able to walk through the museum and view the museum's great collection of artifacts, books, slave documents, civil rights memorabilia, photograph collections, carvings, masks from Africa, etc. Not only were the students allowed to view such interesting items, but also saw a play called “Dance Ballerina Dance to the Voices in the Dark”.
Adler Planetarium and Astrology Museum - January 2004... SAC visited Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum on a January field trip. The museum was full of interesting exhibits, shows, collections and pictures about space, our solar system, and other stars millions of light years away. Some of the attractions we visited and liked the most were CyberSpace Gallery, Dawn of the Space Age, Gateway to the Universe, The Milky Way Galaxy, From the Night Sky to the Big Bang, Our Solar System, Stranded in an Alien Lab, and The Universe in Your Hands.
SAC Ski Trip to Devil's Head ... On January 18th, 2004 nine students and five adult chaperones made the trek up to Devil's Head, Wisconsin to enjoy a day of skiing and snowboarding. On the slopes, the students braved the cold temperatures and worked hard to perfect their techniques. The students had fun learning a new sport and helping each other. Everyone had a great time and is looking forward to next year's trip.
Florida Trip - December 2003... This year's most wonderful trip was to the sunshine state. Students and teachers escaped from the freezing cold of Chicago, and enjoyed the warm weather in Florida while visiting Disneyworld's Magic Kingdom and Universal Studios of Orlando. The whole trip was a success even though it took two days to drive all the way to Orlando, and it took hours of standing in line just to see five minutes of attractions. Staying overnight in Atlanta, Georgia, the SAC gang had the chance to visit the Coca Cola factory and learn about the wonderful history of the world's number one beverage: Coke. It was a lot of fun to taste various flavors of Coke, and of course browse through the gift shop on the way out. The first day in Disney's Magic Kingdom was just "magical".
Three Different Cultures in 10 Days... Between June 17, 2003 and June 26, 2003 Science Academy of Chicago students visited three different countries and experienced three different cultures on their summer trip. This is how Mr. Ucan describes the trip shortly. "We flew to Istanbul from Chicago, which is a 10 hours long flight. We stayed with a Turkish family for three days in Istanbul. Hospitality that this family showed us was extraordinary. They had two children themselves, one of whom spoke English and hung out with us in Istanbul. Istanbul is a city where you can observe modernism next to thousands of years of history."
Shed Aquarium - November 2003 We had so much fun at the aquarium! When we got there, we sat down and watched a show about dolphins. We learned how the dolphins communicate with each other and with people. They jumped for us and ate a lot of fish! After that, we visited the rest of the oceanarium. There, we saw more dolphins, sea otters and seals. We also saw beluga whales. We went down to the lower level of the museum and watched them swim under the water. Then, each grade separated to see the things that they were interested in. Some of the things we saw were sharks, seahorses, many different kinds of fish, and snakes. We even saw Nemo and some of his friends!
Science and Industry Museum - October 2003. One of the most interesting places we visited was the Museum of Science and Industry. Our students really enjoyed this huge museum full of everything about science and industry. Some of the exhibits were The Great Train Story, Genetics: Decoding Life, Networld, Time, The Farm, The U-505 Submarine, Colleen Moore's Fairy Castle, The Coal Mine, Tales from the Underground, Petroleum Planet, AIDS: The War Within, The Chick Hatchery, Human Body Slices, The Idea Factory, Ships Through the Ages, The Transportation Zone, Walk-Through Heart, Whispering Gallery, Yesterday's Main Street, Reusable City, Imaging: Tools of Science, Apollo 8 Command Module, Virtual Reality and many more.
Wisconsin Dells - September 2003.... SAC organized a field trip to Wisconsin Dells with 3 teachers, one parent and 11 students again. The SAC crew arrived at Wisconsin Dells after a three-hour drive. Their first stop was Wonder Spot. Discovered in 1948, The Wonder Spot has baffled it's visitors for over 50 years. Amazing to both children and adults, the Wonder Spot continues to offer the best entertainment value in the Dells area. No one stands erectly, sees correctly or walks a straight line as things that appear to be quite normal are just the opposite. SAC crew was mystified at what they experienced in this small corner of the world where the laws of nature have gone away. The second place was Serpent Safari. SAC crew took a guided safari tour to view rare and giant reptiles including the largest snake in the world, man-eating Nile crocodile, the world's largest collection of rare albino reptiles and much more!
Brookfield Zoo - September 2003.... The first field trip of the first quarter was to the fantastic Brookfield Zoo in September. The students, some of the parents and teachers were together for the entire trip. The trip to the zoo was an amazing experience. We observed different group of animals and plants in an assortment of exhibition areas. We think that the most popular exhibitions were the Tropical World and the Reptile House. We watched snakes and the reptiles different from last year. A group of students had an incredible experience under the supervision of Mr. Unal while they were watching a snake eating its lunch (a huge rat!!!) We also watched a baby dolphin and her mom swim side-by-side, and a sea lion while he was being fed some delicious fish.
The Cernan Earth and Space Exhibits at Triton College... As a field trip in March, we visited The Cernan Earth and Space Exhibits at Triton College in Maywood. We had the great opportunity of answering and asking questions about space and space related artifacts. We saw a lot of cool stuff related to space, like the Apollo 10 Space Suit, Earth View Exhibits, and the Doppler Weather Radar, just to name a few. Besides seeing the space artifacts, we watched two exciting, very short movies about how astronauts adapt to space life and the kind of work they do up there. The Cernan Earth and Space Exhibits at Triton College was a fun learning experience. One that was fun and enjoyable at the same time.
