Math

At SAC, our Math Department is committed to academic excellence by teaching students one grade level above their current grade in mathematics. Our curriculum is thoughtfully designed to meet each student’s individual path need, ensuring personalized academic growth based on ability and performance. In 7th grade, students are placed in either Pre-Algebra or Algebra I (a 9th-grade level course) according to their beginning-of-year NWEA scores. Students enrolled in Algebra I must successfully pass an end-of-year exit exam. In 8th grade, students advance into one of three pathways—8th Grade Math, Algebra I (9th-grade level), or Geometry (10th-grade level)—providing continued opportunities for challenge, achievement, and preparation for higher-level mathematics.

Language arts

In middle school Language Arts, students engage high-level thinking through reading, writing, discussion, and debate.  Students explore themselves and the world around them through various texts including novels, short stories, articles, poems, and multimedia.  Students explore theme, symbolism, and the use of other figurative language and literary devices.  They learn to write persuasively, using sound arguments that are strengthened by textual evidence.  Through discussion, debate, Socratice Seminars, and Mock Trials, they ask meaningful questions and support their ideas with evidence.  Students also participate in creative writing competitions such as Young Writers.

SCIENCE

The science class is designed to cover the science curriculum standards of Illinois. The course will also prepare students for science literacy through the innovative curriculum of Next Generation Science Standards via STEMscopes.

SOCIAL STUDIES

In Social Studies, students explore pivotal historical moments, eras, and individuals in US History, gaining a well-rounded understanding of how the US has been shaped by the past. Students will also have the opportunity to see how ancient civilizations around the world have developed over thousands of years. While history is a central tenet of Social Studies, students will identify how economics and geography played major roles in shaping history. Lastly, students will be practicing and developing their critical thinkings skills and comprehension through means of reading various sources, such as primary sources, and doing various projects, such as skits, presentations, and research papers.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical education plays a critical role in educating the whole student. In middle school, students will participate in three quarters of physical education and one quarter of health education.

Fiber Arts includes weaving, sewing, embroidery, needle felting, latch hook rug projects, macramé, yarn work, encouraging creativity through texture and pattern.

Students also connect their artwork to art history, cultural traditions, and contemporary artists while developing problem-solving, collaboration, and creative thinking skills.

MUSIC

Music education is an important part of every student’s learning experience. Through memorizing songs and performing with their grade-level peers twice each year, students develop confidence, collaboration skills, and a strong sense of responsibility.
Elementary students, from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 5, participate in a comprehensive general music program. They explore rhythm, melody, and musical expression through singing and hands-on learning with instruments, including Orff percussion instruments, recorder, keyboard, and selected string instruments.
Junior High students in Grades 6–8 may choose String Orchestra as an elective. This ensemble experience allows students to further develop their instrumental skills, work collaboratively, and perform more advanced music.
Our music program supports students’ artistic growth while fostering creativity, discipline, and a lifelong appreciation for music.

COMPUTER SCIENCE

Our advanced computer science curriculum prepares our students for high school and beyond. Students will have lessons on digital citizenship as well as designing blogs and website through WordPress. In addition, students are introduced to desktop publishing through Adobe Photoshop and programming with Programing with Alice
